Thyroid and Neck Ultrasound Scan

private thyroid ultrasound scan

Thyroid and Neck Ultrasound Scan

The thyroid and neck ultrasound scan is used for diagnosing suspected thyroid disease, for example, a lump in the thyroid or a thyroid that is not functioning properly. Swelling on the neck is the most common reason why our clients book an ultrasound scan appointment with us.

It is more common to feel lumps on the neck as the structures are superficial. In most cases, these lumps are normal re-active lymph nodes and a neck ultrasound scan will help to confirm this.  Salivary glands often also cause discomfort or get swollen due to small stones stuck in salivary ducts.

The purpose of this neck scan is to evaluate:

  •  The Thyroid gland
  • Salivary glands
  • Adjacent structures in the neck

Reasons for having a Thyroid and Neck ultrasound scan:

  • History of thyroid problems
  • To check the appearance of a known thyroid nodule
  • Determine the nature and origin of a lump arising from the neck
  • Swelling of the salivary glands
  • To evaluate the neck for any signs of lymphadenopathy i.e. swollen lymph nodes
  • Thyroid disease
  • Abnormal swellings
  • Difficulty in Swallowing
  • Inflammation
  • Tumours
  • Cysts

What should I expect during the neck ultrasound scan?

Before the neck scan, our sonographer will explain the examination procedure. For this ultrasound scan, you will have to expose your neck and move any jewellery. We will place a small amount of gel on your neck and the transducer will slide up and down your neck to obtain the images During and after the examination our sonographer will explain the findings and an ultrasound report will be issued to take away with you.
